What causes miscarriage?

In the past, in the majority of cases of miscarriage, there was no specific cause, although 70% was thought to be the result of chromosomal or gene abnormalities of the embryo.

Over the past 10 years with the evolution of molecular genetics techniques and the possibility of extensive DNA testing, the causes of miscarriages have been explored in more detail and grouped into two main categories:

  1. A) Chromosomal or gene abnormalities of the embryo,
  2. B) The causes related to the target organ, i.e. the uterus where the embryo is implanted and developing (anatomically, hormonally or immunologically).
